The Art of Thinking and Reasoning

If it is said, “Pegasus does not exist” what subject are we talking about?

George Bernard Shaw, the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature, stated “We must always think about things, and we must think about things as they are, not as they are said to be.” For reasoned thought, there are three principles that must be accepted. Read the rest of this entry »

Hellenismos or Other?

Evaluating “Hellenic” religious organizations is an important task, especially for the beginner. Many are excited, want to learn, but can get sucked into groups that may not truly be practicing Hellenismos, just using Greek imagery.

Identifying Happiness with Virtue

Have you ever wondered about what it means to be happy? The United States Declaration of Independence states that all people have the right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” as a self-evident and unalienable right. What does that mean? What is happiness?

A Zeus by any other name

Here is a question that I find is asked quite a bit, “Are all the Gods, from all the cultures, the same Gods only known by different names and revealed through different myths, or are all Gods different Gods?” As to not be confused, this is not the same question as, “Are all Gods and Goddesses different manifestations of a single God and Goddess?” This is more along the lines of, “Is an apple called a manzana in Spanish?”

Eclectic Reconstructionism

I have seen this practice cropping up from time to time in recent months, either with individuals or as part of a specific group. I have had no name for it, so I created one. Read the rest of this entry »

Each according to their ability

Hellenismos is a religion that does not lend itself well to those who wish to place themselves in the role of spiritual leader or authority. The emphasis is on the qualitative value of the practical, emotional, insightful, and ethical, rather than a formal doctrine.

Welcome to Hellenismos.us

My first blog post, I guess, should be a brief summary of why I created this website.

When I created the Mind-N-Magick website, I wrote the mission to state, “It is the result of our desire to aid in creating an atmosphere which offers better communications between the many Occult, Pagan, Mystical and Magickal schools of thought (both Eastern and Western) in existence today.” Additionally, I wrote, “{Mind-N-Magick] exists because we feel that there is an urgent need for networking, communications and unity within our wide and diverse Pagan community. It has been built on the premise that: Without knowing that others exist, and where to find them, we are alone.” I have create Hellenismos.us under that same banner of creating a website that provides better communication, networking, and unity, but this time specifically for the Hellenismos movement.

Books on Hellenismos

I am repeatedly asked for a recommended reading list concerning Hellenismos. I reviewed the one I have posted online (the one I always handout and refer to), and I find that it is really not the best for a beginner. The worst part about it is that it is just a list, with no instruction or direction, forcing the newbie to reinvent the wheel. Therefore, I have created a new recommended reading list.

Hellenismos Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

What is Hellenismos?
Hellenismos, as originally intended, means the belief system of the Greeks, but even in the modern usage (which may be more appropriately Hellenism), refers to the character, thought, culture, and ethical system of ancient Greece. Modern Hellenismos is a religious movement that attempts to reconstruct the ancient polytheistic religion of ancient Greece in a modern context.
