Ritual and Children

While my personal home practice is what it is…personal…I have no issues sharing some of what I do. Others may not be comfortable sharing their practice, and I support that. The Gods are with us all the time, and I don’t see a huge need to share every experience in order to prove to others that I am a practicing Hellene.

Anyway….this particular day has special meaning, and I wanted to share a very sweet moment.

My son and I did a ritual together today. We laid out offerings for the 12, and also paid special emphasis to Hermes, Hestia, Dionysus, Persephone, Aphrodite and Hera.

He stood beside me as I laid the offerings, stood beside me as I burned some incense, and held his arms up in the Traditional prayer position while he repeated my prayers, using the epithets and so on. When I got to Hermes his face lit up, and he yelled, “Hi Hermes!”…and we were both grinning from ear to ear.

Ritual is not a solemn affair. Sometimes I cry, sometimes I smile, and sometimes, like today, I laugh with joy.

It has even more meaning for me to practice this religion as it originally was practiced, not only publicly, but within the home as a family.

Most of us have no choice but to be solitary. I thank the Gods that I am able to practice Hellenismos with my child, and raise him with Hellenic practice, thoughts, and ethics.

Hellenismos has a strong emphasis on family and community…and I feel blessed that I am able to practice in this way.

I look at my five year old…and I see a boy with character, ethics, critical thinking skills, and a growing love for the Gods. I see his gnosis and growing understanding of Hera, Aphrodite, Artemis and now Hermes…and I am filled with joy and an ever stronger love for my Gods.

They are everywhere, and one doesn’t need to be a seer to see, sense and feel them.

But sometimes, like today…I feel compelled to share.

Blessings to you all.

Twinkle.

This was a beautifully honest representation of domestic ritual. I am so happy you shared it.

    Thank you!

I’m very proud of him, and I really enjoy practicing with him and hearing his perspective on things. He really *gets it*. I suppose it’s because he hasn’t had too much indoctrination from other religions, and I make learning about Hellenismos fun,

Thanks for sharing this story. It is nice to see other parents raising their children in their faith. If you’re interested, I wrote an article that discusses a little about our rituals with our children.

I loved your article, and I agree with every point. My own home worship with my son is also quite short…as I don’t want to push his attention span. LOL

Since this is so well received, I’ll write another blog discussing how I introduced my little guy to the pantheon.
