Alexandria, Hypatia and her death, will be the plot of “Agora”, a movie from spanish director Alejandro Amenabar; with a english speaking cast, the movie is expected to premier in october.

The struggle to save the wisdom of the ancient world by the philosopher Hypatia, during the revolts pushed by christian fanatics in the IV century…

The movie was shot in Malta; Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) personify Hypatia, who will try
to fight to save the old wisdom with her two disciples: the slave Davo (Max Minghella) and Orestes (Oscar Isaac)

The Director explains: “The movie, in several ways, is a story from the past resembling what is happening now, a mirror for the public look and watch, trough the time and space; realize things in the world haven’t changed munch since then” (traslated quote from spanish news).

Always I dreamed for a movie about that topic: After all the Christianism weren’t the such passive love preaching lambs for the popular belief… When they got into power, they were pushing and violently destroying the old world…

Wow!! I did not know Hypatia of Alexandria’s story was being made into a movie. I’m sure the tale will be a shock for many.

  2. Aubrianna says:

It was for me when I read about her death. I think the movie will be good, the trailer was exceptional.

The philosopher and mathematic Hypatia, was also big form of her season with her wild murder from the patriarch of Alexandria Cyrille, became the hero of later antiquity. For this murder, the christianity still has not apologized from the humanity!
The murder of Hypatia is completely confirmed and is not suseptible of no contestation. Hopes also Amenabar it respects completely the historical sources, even if already it has fallen in the first historical inaccuracy, placing her death 25 years before!

She has the right her story to be told! Congrats for the staff! She is a martyr, her killers, were so afraid of her wisdom, and of what she represented, that they destroyed her not only physically but also spiritually, by destroying all her writings, so today we have nothing written of her own. This crime was even bigger than her killing! And the most outrageous is that the cause of her death, who instigated the monks to destroy her, Cyrill of Alexandria, is a saint of the Ortodox church.

Well, I'm no Christian, but the idea that Hypatia was murdered because she was a pagan or because she was a scholar is a myth. Her murder was simply a matter of city politics, due to her association with one Christian faction that was in a power struggle with another. See http://armariummagnus.blogspot.com/2009/05/agora-... for an analysis of the real story and how it is often (as with this movie) hijacked for polemical purposes.

At last, at last, at last…. Centuries of lying will be unfolded and the truth will shine upon humanity. Its a strong proof that modern Ypatia's speech at Chicago was not in vain. She may be still young but she reached the truth at early age. The greater enemy of Hellenism through out the ages has been Christianity and its about time we Hellenes get rid of this menace………

    • Apollonaris says:

I would sure hope the talk of rid of this menace is a global feeling of Hellenics for a beast that has its back against the wall and feel its life is threatened fights its most fierce fight. Anyway, you would be massacred!

      • Apollonaris says:

I sure hate community threads that you can not edit once it is posted!

Correction: I would sure hope the talk of “rid this Menace” is “NOT” a global feeling of Hellenics!

The release date is this May 2010!
