You have already turned to the Gods. The Gods are always here, you are just becoming more aware of them and how they function.
Make Offerings, Study, think and discuss are all you need to do.
When in doubt, Simplify.
Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.
(But simple is not always the same as easy!)

Well, Christmass it very much celebrated in the western world, whether in a christian or secular context. So it is nice I think to have someway to have a Hellenic version of it, so we can participate in the holiday celebrations in a more Hellenic style. Besides, modern festivals are bound to be created as needed or seen fit, so you might as well have this 'Heliogenna'. I think I'm gonna try and celebrate it I think.

Since I saw the movie 'The Hogfather' (based on the book by Terry Pratchett) this has been in my mind. The winter solstice is a very important moment in it, if there isn't enough belief (real BELIEF, not the THOUGHT of belief) in the Hogfather on the winter solstice at dawn, the sun will not rise. Instead, a mere ball of flaming gas would illuminate the world (religious vs scientific views). It's a very interesting point of view to consider. The conversation between Death and his granddaughter Susan at the end is very philosophical,a nd even after watching it several times I still feel like I have'nt yet gotten everything out of it that is in there. This is for me a motivator to do something to celebrate the winter solstice (and summer solstice, and the equinoxes).

I am sure Pausanias is not that reliable either, though he is the closest to being reliable. I think Pausanias actually made notes as he goes or wrote a few days or weeks after he saw something.

Now you and I know what happens if you ask us to recount something a few days after it happens! I had trouble the other day remembering who I saw at the bank. I know it was a girl, but was not sure if her name was Sally or Sharon or Shanine, and when they ask me what her hair color was I honestly thought it was either blonde or brown, just not black. When they ask me which counter I was at I vaguely point in the general direction!

Hellenic Lifestyle - Research vs Practice

I agree with the hole balance between research and practice thing. I have been limited to online research, mostly through this forum and other resources like it :-S I hope I can change that in the future. However, having done little real research yet didn't stop me from starting to practice. The first time I prayed to the Gods I just told them I was new and that if I did something wrong during prayer and offering (candlelight en incense sticks at the time) that it was because of me being new to all this and I still had to learn many things, and I asked them to guide me towards acceptable practice.

So they just go hand in hand.

I voted yes. As long as it's done properly, humanely and respectfully than I see no problem. A faith I used to belong to slaughters 100s if not 1000s of animals a day for one of the major festivals.

I'd probably never sacrifice a live animal in my practice, but I think those that wish to should have the right. Plus, it is in line with historical practice, so in that regard, should be within the realm of Hellenismos.

Makes perfect sense. And you are right, without her there's no him. He also has Heraios as an epithet. And they share Zugios/Zygia. Their deep connection is obvious once you look past the myths.

I think I found some descent sources about her, so I'll be reading those. I'm surprised how little there is about her compared to Aphrodite, Artemis and other goddesses.

I did find a book about her:
The transformation of Hera: a study of ritual, hero, and the goddess in the Iliad
Joan V. O'Brien
Rowman & Littlefield, 1993
preview: http://books.google.com/books?id=a77yKM26GfYC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_atb#v=onepage&q&f=false

I couldn't see anywhere to buy it, new or used. And there are no downloads either. I did see Questia had it, but after the free trial asked for credit card and all that I gave up on that.
It seems like it's informative, though.

& thanks re: pronunciation. I always said HAIR-ah myself, but it's good to know the other way is okay too!

I think that's where I'm at with it as well. The idea of losing complete control is terrifying. But then again, the more you try to have control the more out of control things get.

I have that book. Also found in online.
I read parts, not the whole thing. From the bits I read, it's a basic overview sort of thing. I can't remember details, though. I was planning on reading it though, as I have become intrigued with Dionysus.
