I looked at the Hellenic calender today and saw the the festival of Lenaia is supposed to begin at sundown tonight.  This festival celebrates the birth Dionysus from the thigh of Zeus.  We plan to watch movies and drink wine as part of the festivities.  I was curious as to who else plans to celebrate and how.

We weren't sure how we were going to celebrate the Lenaia, as we're still unpacking from our move and much of our ritual gear is still in boxes.

Watching a movie and drinking wine sounds like an excellent idea.  I was just saying yesterday that it had been a while since I've seen "Troy".  I hate that they left the Gods out of that film, but I love Eric Bana's Hector!  Roll Eyes  And tomorrow night the old Clash of the Titans!  Grin

So, yeah, a little incense, a little libation... I've got out an oil lamp for Hestia.  So, yeah, I guess I'll go take a bath and get ready for the Lenaia!

I begin to sing of Pallas Athena, the glorious Goddess, bright-eyed, inventive, unbending of heart, pure virgin, saviour of cities, courageous, Tritogeneia.

It would be kinda nice to have a Theater of Dionysus for just such events.

Here is a diagram of the one in Athens. I had a bit of a time finding one that included the temple. The one pictured here included the "older temple", but a new, larger temple existed just a bit to the south that is not seen here.

Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in ritualism and forget that past and present festivals and holidays were more about a celebration in honor of a god or gods then orthopraxy piety.

The Hellenes were long aware of "the philosopher," Zarathustra (Zoroaster) and relations between the Persian cult and Hellenic cults were perhaps the first clear instance of religious intolerance, first on the Persian side, and, in retaliation, by the Hellenes following Alexander.

It has had a vast and much-ignored influence on the Abrahamic religions even has it left quite a legacy in the Graeco-Roman world.

It's a fascinating example of how religious monism can be dealt with by a religion that's originally and terminally monotheist for all that it exploits dualism in historical time.  The "gods" of the ancient Vedic and Gathic documents are related, the Indian gods getting turned into "devils" in the Persian reformulation of the Indo-Aryan religion that they once shared.  It's hard to read anything about it without being struck by just how much "theological" influence it once had and, indirectly, still exerts.

There are perhaps 150,000 worshippers left, contemptible in numbers, as Gandhi said, but incomparable in accomplishments.  How a small religion survives--or doesn't--is worth thinking about.
