I second that.

Hmm...haven't heard of this movie. Maybe it'll take a while to hit African shores. lol

@Lisa: Agree with Antinous. That's one precocious kiddie you've got there.  Smiley

@phoenixgirl: Harry Potter? Wiccan? *choke! splutter!* You are kidding me, right? I mean, that analogy was meant to be a demonstration of how un-Hellenismos the movie was, right? Shocked

I went to see the movie on Saturday and enjoyed it. It was flawed on two accounts. The Gods are quarrelsome to the point of war. The God of the Underworld is portrayed a bit like Satan and Hades looks like Hell. If you can overlook these minor points its an entertaining film.

That is the pop-culture spin on it. The Christian idea that there is a cosmic battle between Good and Evil soaks into everything.

I have read te series (which is much much better than the movie) and I have to say that I do believe that it will interest others my age or even or people who are younger or older than me in Hellenic polytheism. Before I read the book I was still interested in Hellenic polytheism, but Percy Jackson and the Olympians had made my interest scale go off the charts! Not that I believe the story, but how the Gods were portrayed. So yes, I do believe it will convince others to follow Hellenic Polytheism.

Well, among the classical arts; opera and the baroque, I would say that the gods are much more regally portrayed. Of course people were much more keen on the grandeur of classical mythology and culture in the opulence of the baroque era. Incorporating elements of classical Greek theatre such as the deus ex machina per say.

Percy Jackson is certainly not about the Hellenistic values, but it is a good spin on the mythology. And Riordan is... mostly close to the original mythology, the Titan's attitude aside. (Athena having children was explained as something like "brain child", basically. No sex.)

(Just so people who see the movie know, Riordan's Underworld WAS THE UNDERWORLD, not Hell. Also, his Persephone wasn't... like that. Guh.)

I just got home from seeing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief at the theatre and I must say I really enjoyed myself.  The movie has its defects, but it was a fun action adventure film.  The film could generate an interest in Hellenismos, at least I hope so.

I know watching the movie with my wife rekindled the love I had for Greek Mythos and made me wonder since I had always felt so drawn to the Greek Mythos and the Religion in gerneral if I weren't meant to follow the Gods that I had such passion for. I was the one in high school the defended Zeus' name (Not that He needs a puny mortal to defend Him mind you) when others slandered Him saying that He was wrong for fathering so many children and cheating on Hera. I defended Him and tried to explain His actions the best I could. And in a way that made sense to the people I was talking to. Yeah and so What I'm not that old. So what I'm in the prime of my life. My wife just gave birth to our first child (a boy) and I plan on trying to raise him Hellenist if at all possible. May be hard because my wife is Wiccan. So if anyone has any ideas let me know. But don't think (with me at least) that that movie had a major deciding factor in my choosing a new path. I have always had an afinity for Greek Mythos.

I'll admit that the main reason why I got interested in Hellenismos is because of Percy Jackson but after reading the books I actually re-read the myths and tried to find out what was fact and fiction, so while most of it wasn't even close to the actual thing it did lead me here so it did some good Smiley

It's worth looking at how Atheists who don't have "churches" organize their collective life.  They are huge and Hellenismos is tiny, but a lot of issues are "non-scalar."

The issues are comparable to many in Hellenismos.
